Limehouse Boys is a story about three lads named Ned, Ben and George who land up in an 1830s workhouse in England. As the story unravels, it is told in old-fashioned English dialogue that was native to the lower classes at that time. The Beadle, (a kind of church officer) is a cruel and corrupt man. Many children in his care were abused, used as child-labourers and some were sold off into prostitution. This fast-paced tale is based on terrible historical miss-management of workhouses that occurred in those times. At the back of P. Cox’s book, he gives a detailed account of historical events that lead up to the formation and breakdown of the institutions. The information Cox provides helps his readers glean a greater understanding of this well-written book. It also provides an insight into some of England’s current values and attitudes to Christianity that has been passed down through recent generations. Although a sad recall of past workhouses, this particular novel grants justice and delivers great reader-satisfaction.
