Snatched from the deck of a 74 gun ship of the line, a trio of friends find themselves 400 years into their future aboard a huge new starship. Will they manage to adjust, or will they simply become the labrats some think they should be?

Description

A freak accident on board the HMS Spartan during a sea battle with the French navy in 1804 catapults Midshipman Harry Heron and his shipmates Ferghal O'Connor and Danny Gunn four hundred years into the future, landing them on the NECS Vanguard, flagship of the World Treaty Organisation Fleet. While Captain Blackwood and Major Heron sort out the mystery and determine whether the young men are alive or dead, Harry and his friends are faced with the challenge of learning new roles aboard a spaceship. Just as they have found their footing, they are called upon to assist the Fleet in a rescue mission on the planet Pangaea, giving them the opportunity to prove that their unique skills from the past are still very relevant in the far distant future.

When I started reading ‘Harry Heron: Into The Unknown’ I found it difficult to put the story down. Already intrigued by the title, I found myself becoming more and more absorbed by the way the Patrick transported his reader between time periods, not an easy thing to do without being confusing.

When in the second chapter the reader is seamlessly taken into a bewildering new world along with Harry, Ferghal and Danny, I found it very believable. It is time travel at its best.

I enjoyed the way the reader could be in no doubt as to which era Harry found himself in. The dialog was so well written that this reader knew easily whether we were in the past or the future.

In my opinion ‘Harry Heron: Into The Unknown’ is a novel to be enjoyed by young adult and older readers alike.
